Gary Cahill says beating Manchester United would be a waste if Crystal Palace don’t see off Colchester United.

Premier League Palace are heavily backed to win against their League Two opponents in this second-round Carabao Cup clash at Selhurst Park.

Boss Roy Hodgson is set to make sweeping changes to the side that shocked United 2-1 at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Cahill is expected to be among those rested but has told his teammates Colchester must be respected if the Eagles want a cup run.

“There is no point in having the result, performance and motivation at Old Trafford to go and underestimate our opponents tonight, we need to show maximum respect to them and get a job done professionally,” he told the Evening Standard.

“I see an opportunity to go on a cup run and get as far as we can, if you can manage to get to a quarter, semi or final, it is wide open and ready to go.

“We take it one step at a time, tonight we have a tough game but one we feel we should win if we go about it in the right way.”

Victor Camarasa is set to make his Palace debut after signing over the summer, while fellow midfielder James McCarthy is expected to start for the first time.

Eagles keeper Wayne Hennessey, striker Connor Wickham and midfielder Jairo Riedewald are all ready to come in to the XI.
