Frustrated Hodgson struggles to find positives in cup defeat

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson was unable to draw any positives out of the shock defeat to Colchester United in the Carabao Cup.

The Eagles have only scored in one of their first four games of the season and were bereft of ideas against the League Two side.

Several fringe players failed to impress as Palace crashed out on penalties after the tie ended 0-0 at full-time.

“I can’t think of any positives to take, I can’t take any,” Hodgson told reporters. “There will be some disappointed players at training on Thursday, who will feel the opportunity was there and they weren’t able to take it.

“We went in to this game with a fresh group of players – resting a lot of players who put in such a great effort at Old Trafford – expecting to go out and beat an opponent three divisions lower than us.

“But at the end of the game, I thought the 0-0 was more than justified, and then we had the lottery of the penalties. We only took one poor penalty, but they took five good ones and that means we are out and they go through.”

Hodgson criticised his players for again not creating enough chances and finding the killer instinct in front of goal.

He added: “The bottom line for us is that until we start scoring some goals, it is always going to be very difficult for us.

“We have had a 0-0, a 1-0 defeat and a 2-1 win, and now another 0-0, that’s because we don’t, in my opinion, create, or take enough goalscoring chances.”
