Crystal Palace keeper Wayne Hennessey has welcomed the long-awaited return of James Tomkins.

The defender made his first appearance of the season in Palace’s 2-0 defeat at home to Manchester City on Saturday.

He had been out of action since April when he suffered a groin injury against Newcastle United.

“It’s fantastic to have him back, a great guy, great lad and fantastic defender,” said Hennessey.

“He’s a defender’s dream, he’s so good on the ball and what he does in that role and it’s nice to see him back after quite a while out with injury, so I’m really pleased for him.”

Hennessey played his first league outing of the season as No.1 Vicente Guaita was sidelined with a groin injury.

The Wales star pulled off a number of superb saves but could do nothing to prevent title-chasing City run out victors with two excellent goals.

But he takes heart from Palace’s second-half display where his opposite number Ederson produced two incredible stops to help them to the victory.

“We’re a bit disappointed about the result as we gave it a go in the second half,” added Hennessey.

“Ederson has pulled off a couple of fantastic saves – and if they go in, we’re on the up and then it’s a completely different game.

“The second goal was a fantastic move and that’s Man City for you. Little flicks, one-twos, chip over heads, they’re a fantastic team no doubt about that.”
