Hodgson: Camarasa is training well and going nowhere

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson says he has no plans to send Victor Camarasa back to Real Betis.

The midfielder is currently on loan from the Spanish club for the season but he has barely featured for the Eagles.

Camarasa played just one full game against Colchester in the Carabao Cup and five minutes against Tottenham in the Premier League.

There have been reports that Betis want to recall their player and loan him out to a team that will give him regular football.

But Palace manager Hodgson says the 25-year-old is staying at Selhurst Park for the foreseeable future.

“There’s no news on that, he’s been training very well,” he told reporters. “His misfortune is to come at the time when we have such a lot of midfield players and start the season as well as we did with a stable group of players in that midfield.

“He has very tough competition with Max Meyer and both bring us something different. I am happy working with him here and I’m planning on him staying but who knows.

“[There are no murmurs of discontent] but all players, he’s not alone, are not happy if they are not in the team. They have to accept that, we have 20 outfield players I can only pick 10.

“So I’m afraid I’ve made 10 pretty unhappy. His work in training has been very good, he’s been exceptionally professional and I respect him as a player.”

Hodgson added that misfiring striker Christian Benteke is another player he intends to hold on to.

“It would be a concern if the club were planning to sell him because we only have two centre forwards plus a recovering Connor Wickham but Connor has not played for a long time,” he said.

“Of course with our shortage of front players it would be a concern but as far as I know we have no plans to sell him.

“When you sign a contract with a club you sign to play at that club during the good times and the bad times. It would have to be something both he and we wanted but at the moment I’ve got no suggestion from my part that it is something I want.”

Hodgson faces off against his old club Liverpool on Saturday and will select from a fully-fit squad. Joel Ward (groin) and Wilfried Zaha (foot) have recovered from minor injuries they suffered against Chelsea last time out. Mamadou Sakho and Connor Wickham are also fit.
