Hodgson wants goal-shy Palace to improve on finishing

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson has challenged his front men to score more goals.

The Eagles struggled in front of the net last season with their low tally boosted by a 5-3 win over AFC Bournemouth on the final day.

Midfielder Luka Milivojevic was the club’s top scorer with 12 goals which mostly came from the penalty spot.

While attackers Wilfried Zaha and Christian Benteke managed just 10 and one respectively.

The Eagles drew a blank in Saturday’s goalless draw at home to Everton and Hodgson wants to his team to find their cutting edge.

“We think there are more goals in the team than we were able to show last year, it’s up to the players, who are our front players and goalscorers, to show that,” the manager told reporters.

“I think as the season wore on we became better at scoring goals and taking our chances and I’m hoping that is going to continue and get even better this season.”

The Eagles make their first away fixture of the new campaign at Sheffield United this Sunday (2pm) as they hope to continue their fine form on the road from last term.

“[The good away form] is down to how open the game gets and the type of players that we have are suited to the counter-attacking game: opponents come forward and leave space behind and they’re quite good at exploiting those spaces,” added Hodgson.

Midfielder Jeffrey Schlupp returns to the squad after recovering from an ankle injury. Centre backs James Tomkins (groin), Mamadou Sakho (knee) are still missing, but new signing Gary Cahill could start after featuring for the U23s this week.

Manager Roy Hodgson must decided whether to begin with star man Wilfried Zaha after the attacker was on the bench against Everton last time out.

Blades striker Billy Sharp might have earned a starting role after coming off the bench with a goal to help claim a point at Bournemouth on the opening day.

New signing Oliver McBurnie and Everton loanee Muhamed Besic could be involved, but Lys Mousset and Ravel Morrison are still unavailable.
