Cahill pays tribute to Palace’s injury-struck defence

Crystal Palace defender Gary Cahill has praised his teammates for coping with the injury crisis at the back.

Palace enter the busy festive schedule with four defenders currently undergoing treatment in a squad lacking depth in that area.

Scott Dann is out with an ankle strain, back-up centre half Martin Kelly is covering for the injured right back Joel Ward (groin).

Meanwhile, left-back Patrick van Aanholt (hamstring) and Jeffrey Schlupp (hip) are sidelined, along with centre half Mamadou Sakho (suspension).

Cahill made a welcome return to the team in the goalless draw with Watford on Saturday after recovering from a knee complaint and says he was chuffed with the display.

“That’s seven points in three games and three clean sheets and that’s something to be proud of,” the veteran centre back said to Palace TV.

“As a whole collective unit, we are working for each other and we are reaping the rewards.

“It has been a strange three games, so many different circumstances at the back with different change from having everyone fit and available to having changes left, right and centre. We’ve adapted well which is great.”

Cahill, 33, felt the away point was hard fought against a physical Hornets side battling for survival at the bottom.

“It was a little scrappy at times, and it was a battle,” he said. “They made it tough and we were slightly disappointed with our performance first half so it’s important we went out in the second half and upped the tempo a little bit and I thought we played in their half more second half.”
