Cahill says he will help Palace start scoring goals again

New defender Gary Cahill has vowed to help fix Crystal Palace’s goal-scoring problems.

Palace have drawn a blank in their first two games of the Premier League season against Everton and Sheffield United.

The team struggled for goals last term with midfielder Luka Milivojevic the top scorer with 12, but most of those were penalties.

Centre half duo James Tomkins and Mamadou Sakho were barely a threat at set-pieces, scoring just once between them.

Cahill, who is set to make his Palace debut at Manchester United on Saturday, netted important goals at former club Chelsea and he has promised to chip in with his fair share at Palace.

“Over the years, the goals in terms of my career, have been decent for a centre back so I’d like to contribute in that way,” he told Premier League Productions.

“I always think as a centre back, if you can get five goals a season, anything around that mark, is a good return. I would love to get that.

“But first I need to get into the team, I need to get back up and running. There’s competition with many centre backs here that are very experienced, so let’s get back out there playing with a smile on my face and a determination to win games.”

The 33-year-old endured a frustrated final year at Chelsea where he was exiled by manager Maurizio Sarri.

Cahill says he will use the pain of being left out as extra motivation to spur him on to success with the Eagles.

“I think it’s easy now for me to motivate myself and to be hungry because all I have to do is flip my memory back to last year,” he said.

“I’ve always looked at things slightly negatively because it fires you up to go and prove people right, prove yourself right, and that’s the way I’ve found my motivation. All the good things I’ve achieved in my career, I’ll enjoy when I finish.

“Personally I get my motivation from last year. Playing whatever [games] it was, was a joke in my eyes. I have every motivation to go out and I want to win football matches.

“I want to play at the top level, which is the Premier League, and I want to get back to the levels and the consistency that I’ve produced season after season. Last year was a blip, but I’ll put it right in the next few years.”
