Hodgson: Zaha not ‘delighted’ to have move scuppered

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson says Wilfried Zaha is “not jubilant” at failing to land a move away.

Zaha, 26, was linked with transfers to Arsenal and Everton during the summer window, but Hodgson believes the forward remains professional and fully committed to the Eagles.

Palace kick off the new 2019/20 campaign against the Toffees at Selhurst Park and Hodgson insists Zaha will feature.

“The outcome he wanted was to be sold and to leave the club,” said Hodgson.

“I can’t say to you that he’s jubilant. I can’t say to you that he’s delighted with the situation because it’s not the outcome that he wanted.

“For us it’s been a very good outcome because Wilf is still with us and we’re looking forward to once again benefiting from the skills he brings to us to help us win football matches.

“The fact is he is a professional. He realises that and committed to the club and helping us to do what we need to do to stay in the league.

“His training performance today was just as good as it was on Monday and Tuesday before yesterday’s circumstances persuaded me to not submit to subjecting him to a training session that day because of his obvious mental state.”

Palace’s Africa Cup of Nations contingent Cheikhou Kouyate, Wilfried Zaha and Jordan Ayew are in contention for starting roles in the season opener at home to Everton.

Centre backs James Tomkins (groin), Mamadou Sakho (knee) miss out, so new signing Gary Cahill is set to make his Eagles bow. Jeffrey Schlupp (ankle) is also sidelined, but new boys Victor Camarasa and James McCarthy could make their debuts in midfield.

Everton’s new buy Fabian Delph is missing with a thigh problem, while full back Leighton Baines is a doubt. Moise Kean, Alex Iwobi and Jean-Philippe Gbamin, who all joined over the summer, are named in the squad.
